What is Spread?

A spread in trading is the difference between the buy (offer) and sell (bid) prices quoted for an asset. The spread is a key part of CFD trading, as it is how both derivatives are priced.

Many brokers, market makers and other providers will quote their prices in the form of a spread. This means that the price to buy an asset will always be slightly higher than the underlying market, while the price to sell will always be slightly below it.

Spread can have a variety of other meanings in finance but they all refer to the difference between two prices or rates. For example, it is also a strategy in options trading,* known as an option spread. This involves buying and selling an equal number of options with different strike prices and expiration dates.

How do you calculate the Spread?

The spread itself is measured in 'pips' which is the smallest unit of price movement of a currency pair. So, the spread in the below example is 2 pips.

Why are Low Spreads so important?

As a trader, trading with low spreads can be essential to trading a profitable strategy. Many trades have had the experience of having their stop loss hit by half a pip only to have the market reverse back in their favor. It is possibly the most frustrating experience a trader can have and so by trading with tighter spreads, or by building the cost of your trade in the commission, you can often hold onto that trade for another half a pip, which can be the difference between a winning or losing trade.

High Spreads

Wide spreads can be the result of low liquidity or high volatility. Exotic pairs that are not as frequently traded will typically have wider spreads.

Low Spreads

Low spreads can be an indication of high liquidity or lower market volatility. Spreads are typically lower in market sessions and outside of economic news announcements.

What is Swap?

Forex swap fee or forex rollover represents the interest traders can earn or pay on positions held overnight on the Forex market. A swap long fee will be applied when traders keep long positions open overnight, and swap short will be applied when traders keep short positions open overnight.

For example: if traders are short EUR/USD overnight, traders will be charged interest for borrowing EUR, and traders will receive interest for lending USD.
If traders are long EUR/USD overnight, traders will be charged interest for borrowing USD, and traders will receive interest for lending EUR.

Important Swap/Rollover Rate Facts

- Swap rates are applied at 00:00 platform time
- Swaps are applied each night onto your open positions and when the position is left open it is given a new ‘value date’. On Wednesday night however, the new value date for a trade held open is changed to Monday. Due to this, swaps are charged at triple the rate
- Check your swaps on your MT5 Market Watch panel. You simply right click, select ‘symbols’, select the instrument and then select ‘Properties’
- Each currency pair has its own swap charge and is measured on a standard size of 1 lot (100,000 base units)
